The church of Christ that meets at Chapel Hill began assembling in 1917. Since then, it has been a vital part of the Chapel Hill community. Through evangelism, benevolence, and service the church seeks to be the shining light of Jesus in Chapel Hill. Our church family is a sincere, loving, and dedicated group of people. The Lord has blessed the labors of this church, and it is our prayer that He will continue such blessings. Our aim is that all things done by and through the church here will bring glory and honor to Him.
What is the church of Christ?
In Matthew 16:18, Jesus promised to build "His" church that would last for all time and overcome evil and death through Him. He fulfilled that promise in Acts 2 on the Day of Pentecost when the Good News of His resurrection and reign was proclaimed for the first time. Faithful disciples went everywhere carrying the saving message of Jesus Christ to the world. These disciples began to be called "Christians." As individuals heard and obeyed the Gospel, the Lord added them to His church. Local groups of disciples met from "house to house" in the beginning and city to city as the message spread. There were groups of Christians meeting each Sunday to worship God, encourage and teach one another, give, and take the Lord's Supper. These groups wore the name of Christ – "churches of Christ"–because He purchased these believers with His precious blood (Rom 16:16; Acts 20:28). The Lord's Church belongs to Him. It answers to no denomination and follows no creed but the New Testament.
